Welcome to an independent guide to golf along Ohio’s North Coast — the Lake Erie shoreline that runs through Huron, Sandusky and Erie County. This is one of the Midwest’s most underrated stretches of public golf: a big freshwater lake that cools the summers and shapes the wind, a season that rewards spring and fall play, and a handful of courses worth a detour. Our aim is simple — help you understand the golf here, how it plays, and how to build a round or a whole weekend around it.

The site takes its name from Sawmill Creek Golf Club in Huron, the Tom Fazio-designed course on the water that put this area on golfers’ maps. It is the reason many people first search for “Sawmill Creek golf,” so we cover it in depth — but the guide reaches across the whole North Coast scene, from friendly municipal loops to the region’s marquee lakeside layout.

What makes North Coast golf different

Golf beside a Great Lake is its own thing. Lake Erie is shallow and warms quickly, so the shoreline courses green up early and hold color late into the fall. That same lake pushes a steady afternoon breeze across exposed holes, which turns otherwise modest yardages into genuine tests of ball flight and club selection. Add rolling glacial terrain, mature hardwoods that light up in October, and wetlands that double as bird habitat, and you get scenery that punches well above the green fee.

Because so much of the golf here is public and daily-fee, it is also refreshingly accessible. You do not need a membership or a connection to play the best course in the county. You just need a tee time and a forecast you can live with.

Start with the Fazio course

If you play one round on the North Coast, make it the lakeside course at Sawmill Creek. Opened in 1974, it was only the fourth course Tom Fazio ever designed, and it remains one of just three Fazio layouts in Ohio. The routing splits into a wooded, traditional front (the “Creek Nine”) and a more open, water-lined back (the “Lake Nine”) that borders Sheldon’s Marsh and Lake Erie. It is a par 71 that stretches to about 6,700 yards — long enough to matter, short enough to enjoy. We break down the course, the design and its history on the course page.
